Lights were lit, gifts were being exchanged, and punch, eggnog and cakes were abound as the Christmas party got well underway. A much quieter event than the public meeting earlier in the day, Celestia was using the time to reconnect with her student and her friends as much as the guests took the opportunity to get together with all their friends.
‘Shy sat off to the side of the room, itching at the gaudy sweater she had been stuck wearing for the night due to the fact she was still on thin ice over the mess Luna’s ‘message’ had caused (And the talk Dashie had to have with Scoots after that, the awkward, uncomfortable talk). Luckily, the pony wasn’t suffering alone, since Pinkie let none of the household leave without the ‘most Christmassy Christmas Sweaters she could find!’
And they certainly were ‘Christmassy’, as many lights between the four as any tree in town, decorated in bows, snowflakes, trees, holly and just about any other holiday depiction you could crams onto a surface of fabric.
Rarity looked ready to keel over when the four of them walked in, or at least have some sort of stroke.
Speaking of Rarity, she seemed to be bragging a fair bit, at least somewhat subtly, about the man she seemed attached by the arm too, her dress of choice drawing attention to the rather extravagant pendant around her neck.
Frederic Nancy Pants was nice enough, and Rarity seemed absolutely obsessed with her date, but something was bothering the yellow pony, something that took her a few minutes to realize…
Spike wasn’t here…
In fact, since she thought about it, she hadn’t seen him since they had arrived. Making sure Dashie and Pinkie were occupied, ‘Shy slipped out of the room.

After checking the house, ‘Shy finally found her sitting target outside on the porch swing, staring blankly as the snow fell, a small, wrapped box set by his side.
“Spike?”
Spike almost seemed ready to jump out of his scales before he registered who it was, “Oh, ‘Shy, didn’t see you there,” the dragon chuckled nervously, “Just thought I’d come out, ya’ know, for some fresh air.”
‘Shy gave the dragon a deadpan look, before looking down at the small box. She caught sight of an “Ra” before spike pulled it out of view. ‘Shy gave Spike an inquisitive look.
“It’s nothing, really,” Spike said, his voice cracking a bit.
Sighing, ‘Shy jumped onto the swing, putting a hoof onto the dragon’s shoulder, “Spike…”
With a shuddering sigh, spike pulled out the box and took off the lid, revealing a well carved, if slightly lopsided, heart shaped ruby, bound with a small chain.
“It’s beautiful,” ‘Shy cooed, the red light glinting in her eyes, the gem almost seeming to glow in under the night sky.
“It’s a Fire Ruby. Celestia sent me one for my birthday ‘cause they’re really tasty. It took me a while, but I worked it down like this, took me weeks to get it just right,” the dragon chuckled to himself, “Half the time I had to stop myself from just chomping down on it.”
“Wow, Rarity’s gonna love it.”
Spike snorted, a fireball hissing as it hit the snow, “I don’t think she’s even notice, did you see that think that Fancy Pants boyfriend got her? I think a couple of those stones are the size of my teeth, professionally made, but this,” he sighed as he looked at the box in his claws, “This is just a rock nibbled down by a dragon.” He closed the box, setting it down and warming his claws with some fire, “I don’t know why I thought I had a chance. She’s so beautiful, so of course she’d find a guy that could give her everything she deserves,” a small tear ran down his sullen face, “at least she’ll be happy with him.”
‘Shy was conflicted. She hated seeing anyone sad like this, especially those close to her, Pinkie, Dashie…
Spike…
She wanted him to be happy, but at the same time, there was that little voice in the back of her head, that greedy little voice whispering that he could be happy…
With Her…
But she knew Spike, he was helpful, friendly, but stubborn. To see him just give up like this…
Curse her kind nature!
“Spike!” she forced him to look her in the eye, a hoof on each shoulder, “Don’t talk like that, that wasn’t just made by ‘some dragon’, it was made by you. You worked hard, and put yourself into making that necklace, and that makes it much more special than something someone just bought at a store. It’s like Pinkie’s sweets; they always taste so good, because she puts her heart and love into them. That necklace is special and one of a kind, and if Rarity can’t see that, then I guess that’s her loss, but you won’t know if you don’t try.” After a few seconds of silence, ‘Shy turned red, noticing how close her face was to his, before pulling back, “I-I mean, even if she didn’t like it, at least you’ll have tried.”
Spike took a moment before smirking and puffing out his chest, “You’re right, she’s gonna love this. How could she say no to a stud like me?” He patted the ponies head, “Thanks, ‘Shy.” He moved to leave, but hesitated, “Oh, I almost forgot,” Surprisingly, he punched himself in the gut, a gout of flame jetting out of his mouth before he caught another box, setting it down in front of ‘Shy, “Happy Christmas.”
The pony watched him run inside, before looking at the box. Carefully nudging the lid off, she found herself looking at a collar, simple looking, but in place of the tag was a butterfly…
…Was that emerald?
It was a bit uneven, but it looked as carefully carved as Rarity’s pendant, albeit smaller. ‘Shy stared at it, she didn’t know how long, before carefully slipping hers off from under her sweater, slipping on the new collar. Looking in the window, she saw Spike presenting the box to Rarity, who hugged the dragon, smiling. Mr. Pants patted him on the head, something Spike seemed somewhat uncomfortable with, but let it slide. Smiling somberly, Shy put her old collar in the box and slipped it under her sweater before trotting back inside.
In the doorway, she was greeted by Spike with a hug and a whispered “Thanks”, before they heard Pinkies giggling. Spike and ‘Shy found everyone in the room looking at them, or rather, looking above them, where an indigo aura surrounded a piece of hovering mistletoe. Stunned, both dragon and pony froze, turning red. Stunned as they were, ‘Shy felt herself move, not really of her own volition, before her lips were pressed to Spike’s cheek, earning ‘Aww’s all around.
In the corning of the room, just behind her sister’s back, Luna smiled, a dark blue aura surrounding her hand.
Holiday were always such fun.
